The final Friday indoor fananza of 2004 was a real cracker. Not because of some silky shooting from McCausland; not because of a near broken and bloody nose that belonged to McMahon; not even because of the once-in-a-lifetime goal from Wallace. No, this game was a cracker because, like a real Christmas cracker, it was one-sided and was always only going to break one way.
Once again, a new comer was spotted on the field and, rather than allow him to get in the way, we politely asked him to play. He went by the name "Ian" and he fitted in well... a little too well if you ask me. It's almost like he'd played the game before... hmm... but, in the words of my hero, Homer Simpson, "that's for the courts to decide."
The regular bunch of lads were on hand to add the "g" and "a" to "me" so that we actually had a game to play. There were many, many superb plays during the game but a highlight was a storming run from Wallace down the right-hand side to meet the ball, hit up field by Ormo, and slotted into the net with Wallace's oversized right boot.
Another splendid move was started by Guv on the right-hand side of his own half. Holding up Todd, he passed to Walls who in turn pushed forward. Spotting the run from McMahon down the left, Walls quickly passed his way. McMahon, who was too quick for Ingram, put the ball in the back of the net from an impossible angle.
The Rookie, Connolly, was on top form once again with a sterling effort against people twice his height. Most notable was Connolly's good response to Wallace using his weight against the young man. Rather than get even using under-handed means, Connolly kept a clean moral slate and decided to out-do, using his superior skill, those who thought he was too short to be playing. Kudos, Ben!
Thus endeth the affair... although it was the losers who got the "goal-the-winner," it remains that the winners were victorious.
They should relish the victory while it is theirs because, after some turkey and Shloer, there will be a hoarde of Slayers hungry for battle and thirsty for victory.
'Til next year...
